Roscommon forward Donie Smith has confirmed his retirement from inter-county football.

The Boyle man made his debut for the Rossies during the 2012 championship and would go on to win two Connacht SFC titles in 2019 and 2017, along with four Allianz League Division 2 crowns, lifting the trophy as captain in the team’s 2022 success.

This past season saw Roscommon earning promotion from Division 2 once more, losing out in the league final to Monaghan, before exiting the All-Ireland SFC to Cork which marked manager Davy Burke’s last game in charge.

All in all, the 32-year-old Smith made 133 senior appearances for the Rossies throughout his playing career, with county board chairperson Brian Carroll describing him as having “always wore the primrose and blue with great honesty and pride”.

"On behalf of everyone in Roscommon GAA, I want to thank Donie for his dedication and commitment to the Roscommon jersey over the past 13 years,” he said.

"He always wore the primrose and blue with great honesty and pride. Donie's scoring tally of 8-273 shows the consistent level of high performance that Donie gave while on the pitch.

"We wish Donie, Laura, and Sadie all the very best for the future and a long, happy, and healthy life."
